The Dainty Maker Box No. 3 is a mixed media butterfly wall hanging. I had Mother's Day in mind when I created this maker box and I'm so excited for each of you to make it your own! This would be a fun craft to make for mom or with mom, but, really, these boxes are sweet for any occasion. I know that my girls and I definitely had a lot of fun making ours!
Whether you or your littles are neutral lovers, or the "color all the way" type, there is something for everyone with this maker box.
These maker boxes are made to be done together, to encourage quality time, that's why I don’t put an age limit on these projects. Depending on how old your child is, you may need to tweak the steps slightly in order to make it fun for everyone.
For example: My girls are 12 and almost 4 and they both loved this craft. My older daughter did it entirely independently and my younger daughter could do just about everything but cut the pattern and fabric on her own. I went ahead and cut out her patterns and fabric ahead of time to make it easier for her to do the project, and this allowed us to work on it step-by-step together.
This keepsake is meant to be kept for a lifetime, so we used two types of glue to help make that possible. My girls each use a low temp glue gun, which is warm, but not hot. (Here's the link to the glue gun.) We also used a tacky glue for some parts, which is best for use on fabrics. (This kind.)
*These glues can also be found at any craft store and are used for just about every maker box.
Be sure to tag @thedaintymaker on Instagram so I can see all your masterpieces!
1. Lay out all materials / supplies.
2. Cut out 6 pattern pieces
3. Place one of the two pieces of canvas (textured side down) in front of you and trace butterfly pattern.
4. Cut it out.
5. Place back down (textured side down).
6. Fold macrame “hanging loop” in half.
7. Glue end pieces to the middle of the back of the cut canvas piece. This will create your hanging loop. *Hot glue works best for this step.
8. Grab the 3 knotted pieces of macrame.
9. Fold your pipe cleaner in half and pinch around first piece of cording. (Non-knotted side). This will help thread the beads on. Do the same for all 3.
10. Once all the beads are on. Pinch the loose sides and hot glue to bottom center of cut canvas. Allow to dry.
*Note: There are two 8" pieces of knotted cording and one 10" piece. I used the longest one in the center and the two shorter ones on each side.
11. Glue the cut-out butterfly piece of canvas onto the center of the uncut piece of canvas; allowing extra space on all side. (*Tacky glue works best for this step.) Make sure the macrame loop and 3 hanging macrame pieces don’t get tucked in.
12. Press and smooth out glue. Set aside to dry. *Tacky or fabric glue works best for this step.
13. Trace butterfly body backing pattern on felt strip and cut out.
14. Fold the gold wire in half and glue to the top of felt butterfly head.
(*Hot glue works best for this step.)
15. Take the front of the butterfly body (fur/glitter piece) and place face-down. Add glue to the back and attach felt body wire-side down. (So wire antenna are sandwiched between both body pieces.)
16. Add dainty pom eyes on each side and set aside.
17. Grab the canvas / macrame cording / bead piece that is now dried and cut out around the cut shape. I left a little extra around to give it a raw edge look. Be very careful not to cut the macrame loop and hanging pieces. Simply move them out of the way in those sections.
18. Now is the fun part! It’s time to decorate the wings any way you wish. You can use the pattern pieces to trace shapes out of fabric, use the “extra” macrame cording to make piping lines, add sequins, trim, etc. The possibilities are endless!
You can also trace the inner wing pattern pieces out on the extra fabric and lace to glue on.
19. Once the wings are decorated, glue butterfly body to center. *Hot glue works best for this step.
20. Find the perfect place to hang your butterfly masterpiece!
Happy making!
xx, Chrissy
Box No. 2 is a fun one. I’m excited to share these leprechaun houses with you! One of the best things about this craft is that it can be used after St. Patty’s Day for imaginative play with any little figures! The possibilities are endless and I can’t wait to see what you create.
As always, you can use the back of the Dainty Maker card included to draw out your design ideas.
1. Cut out pattern pieces
2. Cut flap of white box off. (It will be used to trace flower box/ number sign pattern pieces and whatever else you’d like to add.)
3. Flip box over and paint if you’d like.
4. Allow to dry.
5. Trace flower box pattern pieces on the cardboard flap that was cut off.
6. Glue together flower box. Paint if desired. Let dry. (You can also cut a small rectangle to write a house number on it.)
7. Paint egg carton chair if desired.
8. Once house is dry, trace door and windows on the house. *Important*- make sure not to cut all 4 sides of door. You’ll want a flap, so only three lines are cut. The same technique applies to the windows if you’d like to keep a flap on them. (A box cutter or crafting blade works best.)
9. If you’d like to paint the door a different color, now is a good time to do it. Allow to dry. Add gold brad doorknob.
10. Glue small wooden beads on large wooden beads to make planters.
Tip: Be sure to add some hot glue around one of the smaller bead’s hole and line up with larger bead’s hole. You'll want to try and keep the glue out of the holes so you can slide the pipe cleaner through both beads. Hold firmly until dry. Do the same for the other set of beads.
Paint them if you'd like to add a pop of color! Allow to dry.
11. Slide folded pipe cleaner through beads (pointy ends first). To make the “leaves” just bend and twist in three sections.
12. Decorate house with sparkle foam. Get creative!
Don’t forget to sprinkle your gold sequins to attract your leprechaun friend!
Use the fabric and trim to design a cozy patio. It’s great for a rug or door mat.
The pattern for the window box also doubles as a table pattern. Simply trace another square flower box pattern and the 2 rectangle flower box pieces. Cut a slit 3/4 of the way through the center of the 2 rectangles and slide together to make an "x" and glue onto the square piece.
More than anything... have fun. Enjoy the process and be flexible and open to the direction that the process takes you.
Happy Creating!

Chrissy

Sure, any glue will work, but if you are hoping to have these projects for a long time, hot glue is the way to go. My girls both have one of these and they are a game-changer. They are warm, but not hot and work great. It doesn't hurt that they are under $6.00 on amazon! A good pair of scissors and fabric scissors are useful too. Depending on the age and level of your little one, there are so many creative ways to work together. For my littlest, I know she has a shorter attention span, so I'll have the pattern cut out ahead of time. As you go, you'll find out what works best.As 2020 comes to a close, I feel like a little extra magic is necessary!

This raffle will run through 12/11 9pm est. There is no possible excuse for children to go hungry in this country. Yet it happens every day, in every community. According to the USDA, more than 11 million children in the United States live in "food insecure" homes. That phrase may sound mild, but it means that those households don't have enough food for every family member to lead a healthy life. And that number dates from before the coronavirus pandemic. Today, projections show that 18 million children could face hunger this year.

I should probably mention that these obviously do not take the place of N95 masks. They are made to be worn over them as an extra cover, possibly even extending the life of the real ones. It was also suggested that if everyone was to wear a mask, it could help flatten the curve. Regardless of what you believe, I tend to lean towards that "something is better than nothing" mentality.
This DIY has an opening at the top where you can slide in a paper towel, or coffee filter, etc. as an extra "filter" I've also read that you can cut up a vacuum bag for a middle filter layer.
Face Mask Items Needed:
- 1 piece of 8" x 14" cotton fabric
- 2 pieces of 6" elastic (I use 1/8" but 1/4" and 1/2" will work)
- Thread
- Pins
1. Machine serge both of the 8 inch sides of the fabric. (If you don't have a serger, simply skip this first step and move on the step 2.)
2. Fold over the two 8 inch sides approx. 5/8" press, and stitch.
3. Next, on the right sides of the fabric, on one of the 8" sides that you just stitched, put elastic in place and stitch to secure.
4. Now fold up the other 8" side with right sides together.
5. Once pinned in place, you will make a stitch down the folded 14" sides 3/4 of the way down making sure to leave the last section open (In other words, don't go all the way down to the fold; leave about 1.5 inches open.) Make sure you are backstitching at the beginning and end of these stitches. do the same on the other side.
6. Now you can flip the "pocket". You will see that you left small openings at both folds and there will be a little "hole" at both bottoms. This will be where you will feed the other side of the elastic through.
7. Now press, making sure that the unstitched bottom is even with the rest of the stitch.
8. Pin 3 pleats to allow for a good fit. Do the same on the other side, making sure that they line up.
9. Slide in the other end of the elastic at the unstitched opening at the bottom and pin in place. Make sure to slide in elastic at least 1/2" to make sure it will catch in the final stitch. Then do the same to the other side.
10. Stitch both sides 1/8" from the end. I backstitch a few times at elastic to make sure it is really stitched in there. Do the same to the other pleated side.
11. Lastly, you will stitch the top closed on both sides, leaving an opening in the middle to slide in a "filter" layer. I've divided the top in 3 even sections. You can modify however you'd like depending on what you are putting in the center. Stich both sides starting at ends and stopping at pins, making sure to backstitch.
That's it! You have your mask.
Be safe and take care of each other.

Chrissy

{ "Love her but leave her wild" Print, wallpaper, diaper bag, changing pad cover }
I'm so excited to share Greta's Nursery. This little space has been a labor of love that Scot and I (with the help of family and friends) have poured our hearts into over the last few months.
This room was originally my studio for Dainty Cheeks when we first moved into this 200-year old house. It served its purpose as an inspiring, creative space for me. But now that it is complete, I am so excited to watch our new little one grow and make memories in her very own new space.
When I started to plan the space, I wasn't sure what I wanted for her exactly, but there were four elements that I was sure about... I knew that I didn't really want a "theme", I wanted to do a bold wallpaper accent wall, I wanted there to be some deeper meaning with nostalgia to the overall finished design, and I wanted to use the colors emerald, gold, and indigo.
The name that we decided on for her ended up sort of being the inspiration for the concept. We both fell in love with the name Greta and then looking into the meaning of it, we knew we wouldn't find a more fitting name for this little one.
Greta is derived from the name Margaret which comes from the Greek word pearl. Margaret is my maternal grandmother's name and Pearl is both Scot's great grandmother's name and a sweet nickname that my late grandfather used to affectionately call my mom when she was younger.
Choosing the wallpaper was the very first part of the process. While looking on Spoonflower.com one night in bed, I stumbled upon our Monarch Butterfly print in emerald. I instantly fell in love. I usually deliberate on making decisions at the start of a design project, but there was no hesitation.
Butterflies have always made me think of my grandmother. From colorful brooches, she'd wear on her dresses when I was younger, to beautiful prints of butterflies on dishes and elements in her home. Butterflies are a deep and powerful representations of life. Around the world, people view the butterfly as representing endurance, change, hope, and life. I couldn't think of a better concept for our new baby's space.
{ wool bear, hooded heirloom doll, baby moccs }
Her crib was the next piece added to her room. I knew that I wanted something simple with a more modern feel. We found this on at Ikea. I also loved the simplicity and texture of this mobile from Pottery Barn. Her Clementine Kids quilt is one of the softest, coziest blankets I've ever felt and the other side is a coordinating plaid that I can't wait to use this fall!
{ unicorn doll, sloth doll, crib sheets }
I saw these hooks a while ago and loved the quirkiness of them, but didn't have a place for them at the time. While exploring different swaddle storage solutions/ display ideas, I immediately went back to them and had to incorporate them into the room.
{ swaddles, dolls left to right - jackalope, monkey, heirloom doll, elephant }
This over sized cloth basket is a clearance Home Goods score and is so great for toys because it feels bottomless and is soft for little hands to explore.
{ bunny doll, little bears, moccs }
This little shelf wall has a mix of new and old treasures on it. These are just a few of big sister's books that she picked to pass to her little sister and read to her. Books were and continue to be such a big part of Grace's childhood and I am so excited to read to our new little babe with the help of Grace.
One of my favorite elements is my great grandmother's rocker. It creaks and is broken in and is the very same piece that my dad's father was rocked in when he was little. The cushion cover was one of the table overlays at our wedding and the neutral swan that rests upon it was a prototype sample doll that I never ran. The swaddle on the rocker was one of the first non-furniture baby pieces that I found by the talented Baby Jives Co and it reads " Your bright + tiny spark lights the dark" which I adore.
Greta will be making her appearance in less than 2 weeks and we are over-the-moon and ready for her arrival. The thought of being a mom again is overwhelming and exciting and every little thing in between.
I will be taking time off from Dainty Cheeks for the longest amount of time in 8 years. I'm excited to recharge and gather inspiration from all of the newness of having a little one around. While I will enjoy the break, I will miss creating. BUT- I'm so excited to see how motherhood the second time around inspires me in ways I don't even see coming.
xx,
Chrissy
]]>To add the heart pops, I made 2 parallel slits on each side of one arm (about 1/2 inch apart) with a craft knife, in order to insert the sticks through. *Make sure there is at least 1/2 inch between the two cuts or the card stock can tear when trying to add candy.
Once candy is through, turn over and add Washi tape to hold stick in place.
